From the Editor
by Dan Staehler, Newsletter Editor
A key part of putting out an interesting and useful newsletter is having something to print. Historically, it has been very difficult to get articles on time from those who have agreed to provide them. Your editor has limited time like everyone else, so this article serves as notice that (1) the newsletter will not go out until the necessary input is received, and (2) beyond posting deadline dates, it is not the editor's responsibility to beg for articles. Therefore, if future issues seem to be running late, or do not come out at all, you the membership now know the most likely reason.
My article preference policies will remain the same this year along with the schedule listed below.
- PREFERRED: Simply key your text into an email note
and send it to
staehler@execpc.com.
If you have supporting photos, give them to me at a meeting
(or mail to the address listed below).
- SECOND PREFERENCE: Save your article in MS/Word, WordPerfect
or text file format, attach the file to an email note, and send
to staehler@execpc.com.
- ACCEPTABLE: Save your article in MS/Word, WordPerfect
or text file format, write onto a 3.5" diskette and give me the diskette,
mail it protected by some thin cardboard or leave it at the Chapter Facility for me with phone notification.
- ACCEPTABLE ONLY ON A INFREQUENT BASIS: Typewritten
articles will be accepted only on an
occasional basis (not for submitters
to every issue). We use optical character
recognition (OCR) software to scan and interpret these, but the
resulting error-checking and editing is very time-consuming.
Typed pages must be given to me, mailed or left at the Chapter Facility with phone notification.
- ACCEPTABLE ONLY ON A ONE-TIME BASIS: Handwritten information will
no longer be accepted (except for very short submissions
such as a classified ad).
If you have any questions, suggestions or input feel free to contact me at: staehler@execpc.com (262) 338-1351

A Personal Note
by Ron Champeny
Ed Emanuel Services Held
Chapter 1158 members, family and many other friends and acquaintances
gathered at our Chapter facility to remember Ed Emanuel. He was a great friend
and pilot instructor to many of us in the area around West Bend.
Ed or Captain Ed as many referred to him was known for always being very helpful when anyone had questions about flying. He was always interested in Chapter activities and at the November meeting presented a short video about
how to get a friend interested in flying. Maybe it was about how to get a girl and then get her flying!
We will indeed miss Ed. He was a great guy with a zest for teaching.
He was the kind of person who would go out of his way to give his best.
Many of his students are accomplished pilots today because of him.
Thanks Ed, we will cherish the memories and all the ways you helped us.

A word from your New President
by Jim Dricken |
Since the founding of our Chapter, we have had wonderful leadership. Howard 's first two terms were what led us from our first meetings at West Bend Air to the purchase of our own facility that some called "This Old Hanger". Renovations started immediately and progressed rapidly.
When Keith Brue was elected president two years ago, he made a statement to our board of directors that we need to figure out "What makes this chapter run?" Keith realized that member participation is paramount to any successful organization. With Keith's tragic passing a year ago, the board appointed Ron Champaney, our Vice President, to fulfill his term. Ron has really had a full plate because he is also our facilities director and ran the Chapter and board meetings very smoothly this past year. THANKS Ron.
We have, through hard work, perseverance and generous donations of time and money, one of the Most Beautiful Chapter facilities in the WORLD. A Heartfelt Thank You to all those of you that have made this possible!
As our facility is in it's final stages of renovation we need to, as Keith Brue said, "Run this Chapter." I am asking each and every one of our members to get involved, volunteer and bring your own ideas forward to myself or any other officer or board member----let's make this the Most Active Chapter in the WORLD. Remember: FUN, FLYING, FOOD and FAMILY!
Sincerely,
Jim Dricken, President Chapter 1158

Membership Report
by Howard Kaney, Membership Chairman
This month we welcome 2 new members to Chapter 1158, Irene Emanuel and Rick
Majkowski. Many of you have been welcomed into aviation by Irene, now it's
our turn to welcome her as an official member of our Chapter. Rick is a
newcomer to our group, and was introduced to EAA 1158 by Don Shane. Let's
please make them both feel very welcome!
Member Profile
by Howard Kaney, Membership Chairman
Today we are visiting with Paul Lupton.
 |
Paul Lupton, instructor,
in his favorite element! |
Paul, what's your earliest recollection of an interest in aviation?
My earliest aviation interest was in flying models. I wasn't much into the
the plastic display ones. I had an older brother who built balsa models and
as is frequently the case one family member's interests frequently spill
over to another. I built and flew more balsa models than I can remember
from simple toss gliders to stick and tissue rubber band powered to control
line, to radio controlled models. I still have an interest in models, have
a few engines around and my old R/C equipment.
The most enjoyable experience I had working with the local Chapter has been
.......
Working with Air Camp kids. I still have an interest in models, have a few
engines around and my old R/C equipment. I think you can see why I love
doing this stuff with my Air Camp kids. My interest in amateur radio tied
in with the R/C stuff. All my beginning R/C equipment was scratch built or
kit built.
What do you look forward to accomplishing in our local Chapter?
As a retired educator, teaching is in my blood and I like any activity that
helps spread the gospel of aviation. I'd like to see Air Camp grow and
improve. Educational projects like Flying Start, compass rose, newsletter
articles, all get my attention.
What is your favorite aircraft and why?
I belonged to a flying club in Marquette, Michigan and put most of my first
100 hrs. in a Cessna 120, with an old Superhomer crank tune radio. I guess
most people have a special fondness for the airplane they soloed in. I
didn't start logging time till I was in college and could only fly during
vacations or summer, so it took 2 yrs. to go from solo to private. The
commercial license, the instructor rating, and the instrument ticket just
seemed like natural progressions.
Up, Up & Away
by Randy Finco, Fly-Out Chairman
We always have a Chapter Fly-Out on the 4th Sunday of each month. Anyone is
welcome, if you don't have a plane there is usually extra space in someone
else's. On Sunday, Jan. 27, our flyout was to Green Bay. We had 6 or 7
planes and about 24 people. A shuttle takes us from Title Town over to the casino
where they have a terrific buffet for only $11 per person. Some of us do a little
gambling-great fun!!!
Once a month is not enough for most of us either, so who ever wants to go can
just show up on Sundays at the hangar. We always meet a 8:00 A.M. and all take off as soon as we can.
If we are gone when you get there, check the dry erase board inside as we
always write where we have flown to there. Again, anyone is welcome, just
show up if you are interested.
Also, if anyone has any questions, ideas or suggestions on where to fly,
please call Randy Finco at 262-377-9676 or glps76@aol.com.
Mailbag

Airport Info Logbook
I'd like to start a log of different places to fly to and what is available at that FBO and/or in the area.
Contact me and I'll make sure the information is available at the Chapter hangar. Contact me at: 262-337-9676 or glps76@aol.com
