Air Camp 2000 by Paul Lupton
Thirteen boys and one girl formed the Class of 2000 for Chapter 1158's first Air Camp! Enthusiasm, hard work, and plain fun were the hallmarks of the 6 day program that put 14 youth in airplanes, a hot air balloon, the interior of a B-17, and at the controls of an R/C aircraft. Over twenty members of Chapter 1158 gave of their time and talents to make it happen. Beginning on Saturday morning in pouring rain all 14 members showed up with eagerness and perhaps a little apprehension. The apprehension didn't last long, however, as the group was fitted with their Air Camp T-shirts and caps and received their personalized discovery kits.
Without delay Air Camp Director Paul Lupton and Co-director Al Price led the group into a discussion about the importance of flight to man, animals and even plants! A lively video on the Wright brothers and a brief history of early aviation gave a focus to the day's activities. Hands on demonstrations with models illustrated how the basics of lift, weight, thrust, and drag explained the mysteries of flight. After lunch the group led by chapter volunteers constructed their own stick and tissue flying models. That evening a hot air balloon and crew appeared prepared to do flight demonstrations but were prevented from flying due to high winds. For the moment a ground demonstration had to serve.
Day two of Air Camp on Sunday was reserved for families but in the late afternoon all were invited to the R/C field of the Sky Ranch Flyers. After some ground instruction all were handed a trainer control box connected to an instructors unit. When each model was at a safe altitude the instructor pilot signaled the young pilots that they were in control. Although the novice pilots had to frequently relinquish control of the model to the instructor there were no crashes and each rookie took home a memorable experience.
Day three back at the chapter facility saw participants guided by more volunteers and parents patiently cutting tissue paper and constructing their own hot air balloons. With the use of hot air corn poppers the brightly colored models easily soared to the ceiling. In the afternoon aeronautical charts, flight computers, and flight plotters were brought out. In preparation for the upcoming flight to Oshkosh each participant had to learn the basics of air navigation including reading map symbols, plotting courses and calculating times enroute.
Day four; time for serious building. Using prepared jigs each participant was guided in the construction of a wood wing rib suitable for use in an actual full size airplane. This lesson gave the youth an opportunity to learn safe tool use, the importance of careful workmanship and a handsome souvenir to hang on their bedroom wall. In the afternoon a tour of the local Army Guard helicopter base put each member in the pilot's seat of a Huey helicopter. A short walk across the airport brought them to the operations base of West Bend Air, a major sponsor of the Air Camp. The general operation of computer weather reporting, flight training, aircraft maintenance, and charter flying was explained. Following the close of group activities for the day, individual discovery flights in Cessna 152s were conducted. Each participant experienced the thrill of flight (the first time for several of them!) under the watchful eye of flight instructors. Use of the controls and the reaction of the instruments was demonstrated followed by an opportunity for each novice pilot to try for himself or herself some maneuvers. Reportedly, a popular request was for a steep turn so they could experience a two-G force.
Day five brought the project workshop into full action. Air drills, rivet guns and a lot of organized banging brought the realities of working with aluminum home to the members. By noon teams of two and three participants under the supervision of more chapter volunteers had all successfully constructed a small wing section of formed aluminum ribs, a fabricated spar, and an aluminum skin. New words such as clecoe and fluting pliers had entered the members' vocabulary. In the afternoon another short walk took the group and several chapter volunteers to visit the hangers of Warbirds. A T-28 and a T-34 gave the group an up close and personal view of these unusual aircraft. A flight demonstration by the T-28 owner and airshow pilot Herb Baker put a thrilling finish to the visit. Career information by TWA Captain George Connelly gave participants an accurate look into a day in the life of an airline captain.
Day six was the capstone of the Air Camp. Five chapter members volunteered their aircraft and their time to personally fly the entire group to Oshkosh and the Airventure Museum. A visit to the FAA tower followed by lunch at the Air Academy and a tour of Pioneer Airport capped the trip. By design the schedule of Air Camp had been adjusted

to bring the group home to West Bend just as the EAA B-17 was arriving for a 3-day tour. A parent potluck and cook-out provided the setting for closing ceremonies and a chance for each participant to tour the B-17. Parent reactions and participant feedback was most positive. One parent confessed hesitation in allowing her son to participate but admitted that Air Camp was all he had been talking about all week. Chapter volunteers too, admitted that their part had been more fun than work. With the experience of the Class of 2000 now behind us, it is hoped that Air Camp 2001 and beyond will open new dreams and bring many more youth into the world of aviation!

Letter from the West Bend Beautification Committee
Dear EAA Chapter 1158,

Thank you for your letter notifying the West Bend Beautification Committee, Inc. of the landscaping improvements that were recently undertaken at the Chapter building on Aerial Drive. I took a drive out there myself and admired what had been done. We certainly appreciate your efforts and agree that these improvements will make a positive impression on those arriving in West Bend by air. Our committee would like to extend a "thank you" to your organization for your beautification efforts.

I have added your address to our list of nominations for the Mayor's Beautification Awards, so that your efforts might gain wider recognition. Our judging is complete for 2000 but our 2001 volunteer judges will be given your address for consideration for the 2001 awards.

In the spring of this year, I received a phone call from Paul Lupton of your organization seeking assistance with outdoor signage from our committee. Although we have no expertise in signage per se, we could certainly be of assistance in landscaping around installed signs. Please don't hesitate to contact us if that is something you would like to work with us on as part of our 2001 "Adopt-A-Plot" program.

Again, thank you for your efforts in beautifying West Bend.

Sincerely,
Zannah Crowe

A B-17 Experience
B-17 ground tour
B-17 out the front was great!

by Howard Kaney
Having a Boeing B17 aircraft parked on the ramp didn't seem all that strange. After all, the chapter has done some mighty interesting things. It was great fun for chapter members to know it was parked in our backyard. Kids were clamoring to see how people rambled from one end to the other. The amateur scientists in the crowd were speculating how many horsepower, and how it even got off the ground. Older adults merely wondering how one got in or out of the thing. Oh yeah. The people that got in or out were merely teenagers. We forget.

There are a lot of things that were forgotten. And I wondered if people were approaching this piece of history as one approaches a tank in the playground. Something to climb on, but not ponder, as if it were a disconnected link to the past. But as I saw people pointing and shaking their heads at the airplane, looking at the American flag sporting from the office, I think there was a genuine sense of awe at the role this airplane and its crews played over the skies of Nazi Germany in World War II. I certainly could sense it in the eyes of the veterans that toured or rode in the airplane. Some approached the whole ordeal with a bit of service humor- survived the war, and now my kids thought it would be great fun to have me crawl around in this airplane again?? Laugh it off, and do it for the family. But after being around the airplane, their whole persona changed. They were pensive, even silent. They relived a portion of their history that was both exciting and deadly. But most of all, they remembered.

We wonder what it was really like to fly aboard that airplane on an actual mission? In one small way it could be remarkably similar to flying out of West Bend. On a clear flying day, the view out the nose would be spectacular. Everything laid out nice and neat, just like it is on the map. That's what attracted me to flying in the first place. Except the conditions over Big Cedar Lake at 2000' MSL in July are different than those over Germany at 35000'. The cold. I remember being cold before. I don't remember where, but I know I was miserable and being cold can stretch minutes into seemingly hellish hours. World War II airmen had to get up at three in the morning, after sleeping in a makeshift hut a half a world away, and realizing that your odds of coming back alive were…, well, not good. And people shot at you. And you shot back just to try and stay alive. Just doing your job. Depending on everyone else in your crew of 10 to do their job.

I wonder.

B-17 Tour Coordinator Comments
The B-17 tour stop in West Bend was a great success. Yes, we impressed the crew, and the folks at EAA with our care and cooperation. Most of all, we were a team. Chapter 1158 and Squadron 6 can and do work very well together. Yes, there were the first time bumps that will show up in anything the first time you try. They were minor and few in number. I know that there were a few things that I should have done better. Next time!

Both the chapter and squadron could have used more help from more of the members. Those of us who did help had a great time and enjoyed the event. It was something to talk about for the rest of our lives.

It sure was a beautiful sight in the air and on the ground.

The airport FBO and Management were very good to us and we thank them for everything.

Let's do it again!

Facility Report
by Ron Champeny
This is the most rewarding facility article that I have had the opportunity to write. Two reasons for this are: all the positive comments we have received about the appearance of our building and that we only have a few projects to finish to reach completion.

During recent events such as: B-17 weekend, the Airport Development meeting, our recent chapter cookout/meeting and the Chamber of Commerce exchange on August 23, our chapter received many compliments on the appearance of our facility.

At the present time the facility committee is working on developing signs to identify our building as EAA Chapter 1158.

We plan to finish this project this fall.

On behalf of Chapter 1158, I want to thank all of you for your help on the many projects associated with the completion of our fine building. Our members can be proud to have a place that is not only beautiful, but designed to our specific needs. Those needs, by the way, were obtained from a survey of our members just over three years ago!
