Midwest Express Maintenance Center Tour | ||
by Ron Champeny
Eighteen members of Chapter 1158 visited the Midwest Airlines Service Facility on February 12. Our tour group was split into two groups, each with a lead mechanic or supervisor to guide the tour. The service facility consists of two large hangars. Each hangar is approximately 280 x 200 ft. One hangar is dedicated to routine scheduled maintenance. The other is used to do total overhauls which involves stripping out the plane and doing a complete update including instruments. |

Our chapter has already accomplished what many thought to be seriously impossible objectives by creating a facility and an enviroment designed to foster continuing community interest in aviation for all age groups of people. The next steps relate to fostering small special-interest sub-groups within the Chapter so that each of us can contribute to the overall goals of the Chapter through our own selected areas of interest.
As indicated at our last general meeting, special-interest sub-groups
already exist in the form of:
- Saturday Breakfast at the Copper Penny (two miles west of the airport
on hwy 33) from 6:00 to 7:30 or so.
- Sunday fly-outs on the first Sunday of each month (wheels up at 8:15).
- Young Eagle flights (May through September).
- Air Camp for youths (Ages 12 to 14), which will be an annual event in
July.
- "This Old Hanger" work parties every Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00.
- AeroMart - Our annual contribution to the cause at AirVenture (and a
fund raising event for the Chapter).
- An alliance with the EAA Warbirds of America - Squadron Six who have
about 65 members in Wisconsin and have chosen our facility as their meeting
place of choice.
Additional sub-group options are as follows:
- A Radio Controlled Flying Club.
- A Chapter Flying Club (with a focus on antique aircraft restoration
projects???)
- An EAA Builders Club (we already have about six airplanes under
construction as a group).
- Intranet social groups with chat rooms.
- Training programs (Safety, Maintenance, etc.)
(The list could go on for quite a while, but this gives you an idea of what
options and challenges lie ahead of us)
Anyone interest in any of the above OR anyone who has more ideas, please
feel free to contact me at Keith@WestBend.net. or by phone at 414-732-5356,
Present were: Howard Kaney, President; Russ Kaye, Secretary; Glen Brandt, Treasurer; Keith Brue, Biju Daniel, Jim Dricken, Randy Finco, Don Shane, Dan Staehler>>
Tonight is our first transitional meeting between the present Chapter Officers and board and the incoming Officers and Board (incoming yet to be confirmed by Chapter vote at the next regular monthly Chapter meeting).>>
It has been determined that there should be copies of the election ballots available at the next Chapter meeting for those members who don't bring theirs from the newsletter.>>
It has been discussed and decided that the membership committee shall consist of Howard Kaney, Glen Brandt and Biju Daniel and that Howard Kaney will chair the committee. The committee will consolidate the membership duties. They'll send bills, collect the dues and maintain the membership roster along with promoting new memberships. The Chapter Treasurer will take care of the deposits and account maintenance.>>
During the meeting two Civil Air Patrol Officers showed up, as pre-arranged with Glen Brandt, with a request for hangar space for their Cessna 172 for one or two months out of the year. They would prefer that our Chapter would donate this space however some monetary arrangement might be a possibility. They were informed the decision would have to be made partly by the renters as they would have to move this aircraft to get theirs out when they wanted. A discussion will be held and a decision will be forthcoming.>>
Keith Brue opened a discussion on the Chapter's operating costs which including utilities is approximately $8,000.00 per year and rental income which is approximately $6,000.00 per year in regards to where our dues are currently set. He then made a motion which was seconded by Glen Brandt to drop the raffle tickets and set the dues at $85.00 if paid in full or $90.00 if paid at the rate of $30.00 every four months. The motion passed unanimously.>>
NOTE: In the days subsequent to this meeting Howard Kaney held impromptu interviews with several chapter members who in general seemed to feel the $85.00 is too high. This was discussed further during a hangar work detail and via E-Mail and although the motion passed it will most likely
be amended.
FEBRUARY 2000
Present were: Ron Champeny,Vice President; Russ Kaye, Secretary; Don Shane, Treasurer; Glen Brandt, Howard Kaney, Randy Finco, Dan Staehler>>
Mark Hanrahan has come before the board this evening to request that the south facing windowed lounge area be established as a smoking area. He has purchased a ventilation fan for this area. He said he polled a number of Chapter members and feels our general membership is approximately 20-25% smokers.
Don Shane made a motion seconded by Russ Kaye to have a membership vote by newsletter ballot whether to use the lounge area for smoking with the exhaust fan provided by Mark Hanrahan and the area insulated from the main meeting room.
The motion passed 4-1 with 1 abstaining.>>
By-laws revisions are to be addressed at the next board meeting.
Mark Hanrahan requested a copy of the by-laws and the next revisions.>>
There was a discussion on approving the calendar of events for this year. Glen Brandt wants a copy of the calendar of events before he votes to pass it.
Don Shane made a motion to accept the calendar of events. Seconded by Dan Staehler.
Motion passed 5-1.>>
(Per Ron Champeny)Keith Brue wants to push for a monthly newsletter. It was discussed.
Glen Brandt motioned to keep the current newsletter schedule. Seconded by Don Shane.
Passed unanimously.>>
The possibility of changing the Fly-Outs to an afternoon was discussed. Also Young Eagles events need to start about April.>>
There was some discussion about Aero-Mart. Glen Brandt suggested a committee should be formed. Ron Champeny said Keith Brue wants to address the Aero-Mart subject at the next Chapter meeting.>>
$177.00 was approved for joining the chamber of commerce.>>
Membership Committee Report:
Howard would like help making calls to people who haven't yet paid their dues.
Howard and Glen discussed the possibility of using the Chapter Facility for other community fund raising events to become more involved with the community.
It was suggested that we should target some events for people on the airport and some to invite EAA members to become chapter members, possibly tying in with the B-17 event.
There was some discussion about having another Mustangs Raffle.
March 2000
Present: Keith Brue, President; Don Shane, Treasurer; Glen Brandt, Howard Kaney, Randy Finco, Dan Staehler>>
Deferred the reading of the minutes for the prior special Board meeting held on February 16, 2000 until the next regular scheduled Board meeting on April 5, 2000 (minutes not available yet available).
Membership Committee Report by Howard Kaney - Howard reported that 38 members (out of approximately 65 names) have paid their dues so far. Glen and Howard intend to initiate a call and remind program.>>
Discussed the "Member get a Member" Program. Glen moved that we abandon the program. Motion unanimously approved.>>
Facility Committee Chairman Report - Ron Champeny was not there, but we generally discussed progress. No motions or conclusions.>>
Program Committee Chairman Report by Randy Finco - Randy indicated that the program approved at the February 16th meeting remains intact. Keith noted that the initial proposed schedule excluded the Young Eagle Flight dates. Discussion led to a motion that the Young Eagle dates should be limited to the first Saturday in May through the first Saturday in September. Keith to notify Gerald and Sandy Zorn.>>
Raffle Committee Chairman - It was noted that Pat Schmidt has resigned as the Raffle Committee Chairman. No further discussion.>>
Newsletter Editor Report by Dan Staehler - Dan reported that he continues to have difficulty meeting deadlines due to lack of material. Considerable empathy was available from the Board but no conclusions or answers were presented. All agreed to think on alternatives between now and the next Board meeting..>>
Facility Smoking Policy - It was noted that the meeting of February 16th had yielded a motion to take the question of our Smoking Policy to the general membership meeting on March 15, 2000. It was further agreed that the vote would be an advisory vote and seek a yes or no answer to the question, "Do you want the Board to develop a smoking police which allows members to smoke in the facility during selected times during the week?" Jim Dricken further indicated that he would contribute to the program by installing an air-exchange unit in the smoking lounge which would serve to eliminate the smell of smoke. This question will be presented to the general membership for a vote at the next meeting on March 15, 2000.>>
Chapter By-Laws - Howard presented documents which represent his recommendations as to changes in the By-laws. All Board members were asked to study these documents and come to the next meeting prepared to discuss and vote on the proposed amendments.>>
Web Site and Intranet Site Overview - Dan attempted to do a show and tell here, but our equipment did not work so good so . . . we will repeat this effort next meeting.>>
AeroMart Report - Keith reported that he has an initial meeting scheduled with Bob Mackey on March 17th . This will be a major agenda item at the next Board Meeting.>>
Young Eagles Program - No report - Gerald / Sandy Zorn not in attendance.>>
Education Programs - Keith reported that Paul Lupton is working on the details of a Youth Summer Camp. This will be a major agenda at the next Board Meeting.>>
B-17 Visit - Keith reported that we have been invited to join the efforts of Warbird Squadron 6 to sponsor a visit of the EAA B-17 from July 13th to July 16th. Our responsibilities would be Promotion, Security, Admissions and Merchandise Sales (Including Ride Tickets).
A motion was made and seconded that we not only respond to this cooperation opportunity but contribute to the weekend with a Chapter Open House / Fly Inn. The motion was approved. (Howard later offered to be the Chairman of the B-17 Visit Committee and Keith accepted the offer).>>
Facility Lease - Howard reports that this is still an ongoing open issue. Keith and Howard to discuss this further at a later date. No motions or conclusions drawn.>>
The question of liability insurance came up. The general thinking at the time was that this has been bought and paid for. (Later, we learned from Brenda at EAA that this is not the case. Keith and Don have taken steps to pay for this coverage ASAP).
On April 16, 1912 an American woman walked across the damp grass of the Dover Heights airfield in southeastern England to a monoplane she had borrowed from French pioneer Louis Bleriot, who had made the first flight across the English Channel on July 25, 1909.
Less than a year after becoming the first American woman to gain a pilot's license, Harriet Quimby was ready to make aviation history. At 5:30 AM in her borrowed opened-cockpit airplane , no brakes, and six men had to hold it down to prevent it from taking off while its 50 HP engine was warming up, the Bleriot airplane gained speed and lifted into the air. With the help of a compass (which she had never before used) she climbed through the fog and "bone-chilling" cold, until the French coast was in sight.
Triumphantly, Harriet Quimby had achieved her goal as the first woman pilot alone to cross the English channel, and landed on a hard sandy beach 25 miles south of Calais, France.
The Dresden-China Aviatrix died in a crash at the Harvard-Boston Aviation Meet July 1, 1912.
