Lars Olson (lolson@jefnet.com)
of EAA Chapter 320 writes:
Thanks Steve - Maybe we could start an e-mail dialogue between our two chapters which would be to our mutual benefit. Also if you get a chance, come over to our meeting held the first Thursday of every month, 7:30 pm at the Watertown Airport. Please extend an invitation to your members about coming to our meeting, I feel it would promote good relations plus giving another aspect to our club. Thanks also for offering your help with our web page (http://www.jefnet.com/eaa320).
If you are a quick reader and enjoy our newsletter, you may want to
sign up as an online proofreader. Contact Dan Staehler (staehler@execpc.com
or 338-1351) or Biju Daniel (wznd97a@prodigy.com
or 335-0947)
If you enjoy working with other members once every couple of months,
you may want to assist with the hardcopy publishing. Contact
Paul Lupton at 338-1826 or cfiphd@aol.com.
In fact, if you are
already on the publishing team (see the "Officers, Teams,
Committees" section in this issue), I recommend you give Paul
a call - he and his wife have been carrying the weight for several
issues now.
As previously announced, this is my last issue as newsletter editor.
I have enjoyed organizing our chapter's first nine issues over the
past year-and-a-half. But, time constraints exist for us all,
and it is time to pass the reins on. Dan Staehler and Biju Daniel
will be taking over as co-editors. I will work with them to show
them the techniques that have been used in publishing our newsletters
and placing them online, but beyond that, all choices are up to them.
Look forward to some changes. I plan to remain
on the board through the elections at the end of 1998,
and will remain the raffle committee chairman. And I will
remain webmaster.
But I realized there was another reason why all of
us are involved in aviation. Think back to when
you were leaning over the fence, watching. A
spectator. How did you transition to being
involved? Didn't someone ask you? Wasn't there
someone whom you became friends with that mentored
you, or supported you, or motivated you to be a
part of aviation? Without that person, where
would you be today? I think that one of the
primary reasons that people are involved in
aviation is because of the friends they've made,
and the interests they share, the impressions they
have. Good people. Folks who want to share their
love of aviation with others. Think about the
impact you have as a Young Eagle's pilot on that
youngster beside you. You have left an indelible
impression on that person's mind. If you are not
a pilot, but you are a willing participant,
passenger, volunteer, motivator, etc., then you
are just as important, because you are the reason
people are involved in aviation - to be with others
like you!
It is my wish for 1998 that our chapter is as
successful in forming relationships among the
people in its chapter as it is with any other
administrative tasks. After all, if your needs as
a person are not being met, you can't share your
love of aviation with others. Step forward,
folks, and make this chapter successful by really
getting to know your fellow members. Participate
in the events that we have - booth opportunities,
fly-outs, our social event in January, etc. After
all, the person you meet could be the reason you
enjoy aviation so much!
I was having a conversation with one of our
chapter members the other day. We were
reminiscing about what it is that attracted us to
aviation in the first place. The lore of military
aircraft, the sentimental aspect of a first
flight, the purr of a machine that defied the
laws of physics even before we knew physics - all
seem to be images that pop into people's minds
about aviation. And we speculated about those
that aren't involved in aviation as much as they
used to be. The reasons are many, expense topping
the list. Excuses about government regulation,
different than it used to be, etc., etc.
Chapter Raffle
by Steve Roensch, Raffle Chairman
WE WANT YOU!
The time to sell our raffle tickets is half over. On the one hand,
the good news is that we are close to having enough revenue to cover
our raffle expenses. On the other hand, most of you are familiar with
the 80/20 rule, which loosely stated for volunteer fundraising efforts
says that 80% of the revenue will be raised by 20% of the members.
Except that in our case, 100% of the revenue has been raised by perhaps
20% of the members. As we move into a new year, it's a good time for
everyone to consider the value our chapter provides them, and to pull
out that envelope of tickets and show them to a few friends. I'd like
to share a few reasons why I think this raffle is the single most important
project this chapter has undertaken to date:
PRIZES
A lot of members have complained that they don't know enough people
that they'd be comfortable offering raffle tickets to. But, most
said they'd be glad to volunteer several hours to man a booth at
a local event to sell tickets. The booth committee's role is to
identify events, arrange for the booth and schedule members to
man the booth. This committee needs to become more active.
If you'd like to join, we need your help - call me at 375-2228.
PACKER PARTY!
On Sunday, November 9th, a group of members headed to Lambeau Field
for some tailgating fun and selling raffle tickets to Packers fans.
All told, five members generated over $600 in sales, had a blast
in the Lambeau lot, and had a great time watching the game together
at a bar & grill on the east side of Green Bay. As you no-doubt
are aware, a Lambeau crowd is far too large to be covered by five members.
A fair estimate is that we covered far less
than 10% of the tailgaters. In other
words, had fifty members attended, we very well could have generated
$6,000 in raffle sales. Keep this in mind in the spring, when we will
be organizing similar parties at Brewers games. It's a great opportunity
to meet some fellow members, have some fun and sell some raffle tickets.
The point of all this is that a successful chapter needs revenue. Consider
the revenue this raffle can generate compared to flipping pancakes at three
or four events each year. I now have a color flyer for each member to show
along with their tickets. Pick one up from me at any chapter meeting,
keep it with your tickets, and start showing it around - you'll be
amazed at the interesting conversations you'll get into, and at how
many people are happy to buy tickets.
If you haven't picked up your tickets yet, come
to a chapter meeting, pick them up from me, and enjoy the program. Or
contact me at 375-2228 or sroensch@execpc.com.

RAFFLE BOOTH TEAM
ONCE AGAIN, OUR TWO KEY RAFFLE POINTS:
Giving Wings to High School Dreams
by Paul Lupton
Twenty two West Bend High School students enrolled in my
Aerospace technology class got a tiny step closer to building their own
airplanes. With the help of five chapter members the students were
introduced to the time-tested technology of wooden aircraft construction.
Although the class is held after school hours, students often arrived
early to the wood shop and asked if they could get started before class
began. Having taught the class over the last five years, I would
like to express my appreciation to the Chapter 1158 members
who assisted. In previous years before our chapter was
formed the class was taught without
help. Students were constantly calling for assistance. I could have
been five persons and still not covered all the requests.
Members helping were: Louis Scepanski, Don Brinkley, Howard Kaney,
Jeff Koenig and Al Bruggink.
In addition to the hands-on experience with wood construction the class
also had one period led by Fox Valley Technical College, Oshkosh,
Aviation Division instructor Debra Heath. She brought sheet metal
materials for all students to have
a "riveting experience". They were
taught how to lay out a rivet pattern, drill with an air drill, debur,
use clecoes and use a rivet gun. Chapter 1158 helpers were present to
assist students get a feel for tools seldom seen in a high school.
Although most students signed up for the course because of an interest
in being a pilot, they all agreed that theses special classes should be
included next year.
Students worked in pairs or singly to construct their own wooden wing
rib of either an Aeronca C-2 or the EAA Acro-Sport biplane. Spanning
four class periods students had to learn some basics of working with
plywood, hand and power tools and how to follow detailed instructions.
By the end of the fourth class 16 wing ribs were ready to be removed from
their jigs and proudly displayed by their builders. Although skill level
and quality of the finished ribs varied all students agreed that it was a
valuable learning experience.
Board Meeting Minutes
by Allan Price, Secretary
October 1, 1997 Meeting -
Present: Howard Kaney, Richard Feldschneider,
Allan Price, Glen Brandt,
Don Brinkley,
Dan Staehler, Allen Bruggink,
Ron Champeny, Steve Roensch
»The Board discussed proposed goals and objectives
for 1998, particularly those that support our
Vision 2000 program.
»The Board discussed the progress in our chapter's
application for nonprofit status.
»It was moved by Roensch and seconded by Brandt
that we appoint Paul Lupton as chairman of a
proposed education committee. Unanimous approval.
»Allen Bruggink announced his resignation because
of upcoming conflicts with his continuing
education classes.
»After careful deliberation, it was moved by
Roensch and seconded by Feldschneider that we
modify the Board seat presently being held by
Allen Bruggink to a two-year term (end of 1999) so
that we might attempt to stagger the Board terms.
Unanimous approval.
November 12, 1997 Meeting -
Present: Howard Kaney,
Allan Price, Glen Brandt,
Don Brinkley,
Dan Staehler,
Ron Champeny, Steve Roensch
»Membership Chairman, Dan Staehler, reported a
current membership of 96.
»Treasurer, Glen Brandt, reported $14,180 in our
checking account; about $1,500 of which is regular
Chapter money, the rest is from the Harley Raffle
ticket sales.
»A general discussion was held on our ongoing
application for nonprofit status. It was
determined that the next step should involve Kaney
and Brandt talking to a consultant.
»A general discussion was held on the status of the
Harley Raffle ticket sales. The Board feels that
we should be more aggressive in promoting ticket
sales at public events. Arrangements to set up
our booth or table are not being made even though
we have people ready to do the selling from such a
location. Attempts to delegate responsibility and
to share the load have not produced results.
Members of the Board feel that too much is riding
on this project to let it fizzle; therefore, the
Board will have to find additional ways to get
meaningful membership support for the project.
»As stipulated in our bylaws, there will be neither
a Board meeting nor a Chapter meeting in December.
